Commonly Asked Questions:

How many people are on the team?

Our club is composed of approximately 35 members, and our competition team is 20 members. Anyone with skating experience is welcome to join the team. Our competition roster is set based on seniority, and involvement in the club, but we always try to work with our skaters to allow everyone to compete in their preferred event.

Are there tryouts for the competition team?

Our competition team tryout takes place within the first month of the school year. It is not a stressful experience, it is mostly in place to ensure that all members have a competition program, and are meeting all requirements set forth by USFSA.

How many competitions are there in the season?

We travel to three sectional competitions each year. We have qualified for the Intercollegiate Nationals the last 2 seasons, and are hoping to qualify again this season!

Is there a club team?

Some students prefer to join our club team rather than competing because of other commitments, lack of interest, etc. These members are still able to come to our weekly practices, attend social events and perform in shows.

Is there a synchronized skating team?

Penn State does not have a synchronized figure skating team.

When do you practice?

Our current practice time for the year is 6:45-7:45pm on Sunday evenings. This can vary from year to year since the schedule at Pegula is always subject to change.

Competition members are required to practice on 2 sessions each week, in addition to our weekly team practice.

You can find the full ice schedule on Pegula Ice Arena’s website.

Do you recruit?

We are a club sport on campus. This means that we are primarily self-funded, so we do a lot of fundraising to support our club. This also means that there are no scholarships available.

Is there a team coach?

Our team does not have a coach, but there are many coaches at Pegula Ice Arena who are available for lessons. Our members love to help each other out! We choreograph for each other, give tips when asked, and most importantly cheer each other on!!
